Empowered children

Empower the children of families dealing with cancer

Encouraging a child means that one or more of the following critical life messages are coming through, either by word or by action: I believe in you, I trust you, I know you can handle this, You are listened to, You are cared for, You are very important to me.” ~ Barbara Coloroso, International bestselling author on parenting.

Nshelter is making a difference with elementary and middle school students on two continents, nurturing the children who will be tomorrow’s leaders. NShelter was awarded Best African Humanitarian by the African Awards of Washington.

At the heart of our work, we build a solid, one-on-one relationship with the child. We provide direct practical assistance, connecting kids to community resources so they can overcome barriers to success inside and outside of the classroom. We aim to help each child discover their ability to succeed, whether that’s completing homework, learning new life skills, or successfully completing the school year. We recognize that a social network is critical to a child’s success, and when a family faces a cancer diagnosis, that success is disrupted.

Our volunteers are trustworthy, vetted advocates that help build a support system for students. We help the child to create the future they envision for themselves by wrapping them in a wide range of support like companionship, someone to talk to, and access to school trips and events even when the family budget is stressed. We can help with tutoring and homework, school supplies, clothes, and nutrition. A child with parents navigating a cancer diagnosis does not have to feel abandoned or alone.

NShelter has connected families with

  • Food and clothing
  • Community health referrals
  • Holiday gifts and social events
  • Tutor services
  • School supplies, field trip fees, books, and other practical support
  • Caregiver respite
  • Mentoring

Behavioral issues may result from emotional trauma at home when a child cannot cope with family challenges. We promote and encourage positive behavioral responses to resolve conflicts while helping children build coping skills.

A consistent education experience when life is disrupted

While their parent is in cancer treatment, we support students with homework and education right through graduation, helping them secure a promising future. We can advocate for them when their parent may not be able to, and we offer a friendly ear when they just need someone to talk to.

Nshelter collaborates with patients, their families, local schools, and medical centers so patient-parents can focus their energies on healing. We provide on-site student support and connect families with community resources. As we grow, we hope to provide transportation to school when needed. We aim to increase the number of families we can serve.
